Overview
This forum brings together an expert faculty to discuss some of the ethical issues and challenges faced by lawyers today, as well as the ways that stress and mental health issues can impact the practice of law. You will hear from benchers of the Law Society of British Columbia and representatives of the Lawyers’ Assistance Program about the resources available to support you in your practice. The session will leave you better equipped to care for your own well-being and to find balance in your professional life, and in turn, better prepared to ethically, competently and effectively serve your clients.

Meet the Faculty

Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC
Brook is a leading British Columbia litigator with a practice focused on complex commercial litigation. He has significant experience both regionally and nationally, and has appeared before all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada. Brook has been an elected Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2016. He is currently serving as First Vice President of the Law Society, as well as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, Chair of the Trust Review Task Force, and a member of both the Executive Committee and the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee. He has previously served as Chair of the Law Society Discipline Committee, Chair of the Mental Health Task Force, Vice Chair of the Lawyer Development Committee, Vice Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, as well as a member of the Ethics Committee, the Access to Legal Services Advisory Committee, the Complainants’ Review Committee, and the Unauthorized Practice Committee. Brook is also currently the Law Society of British Columbia’s nominee to serve on the Council of the Federation of Canadian Law Societies, where he serves on a number of Federation Committees, including Chairing the Federation’s Standing Committee on Wellness.

Executive Director, Lawyers Assistance Program, Vancouver, BC
Derek joined LAP as Executive Director in 1996. Derek practised law for 18 years and went on to expand his skills in business and counseling. This diverse range of interests has helped Derek become a respected leader in the legal, health care and recovery communities. He has served on committees with the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a Commissioner of the Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) and the Chair of the annual CoLAP conference for several years. He is also on several non-profit boards of societies dealing with addictions, education and spirituality. He is often called upon to present seminars and workshops throughout the province, and is tireless in his efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of legal professionals and those who care about them. He received the designation of Queen’s Counsel in 2004.

Materials:
The faculty will prepare papers and/or other materials explaining many of the points raised during this program. Materials will be distributed electronically.
