Overview
This forum brings together an expert faculty to discuss some of the ethical issues and challenges faced by lawyers today, as well as the ways that stress and mental health issues can impact the practice of law. You will hear from benchers of the Law Society of British Columbia and representatives of the Lawyers’ Assistance Program about the resources available to support you in your practice. The session will leave you better equipped to care for your own well-being and to find balance in your professional life, and in turn, better prepared to ethically, competently and effectively serve your clients.

Meet the Faculty

Managing Partner, Narwal Litigation LLP, Vancouver, BC
Cheryl D’Sa is a civil litigator, dispute strategist, mediator, elected bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia, Past President of the Vancouver Bar Association and recipient of Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 under 40 award. In 2021, she was awarded an Excellence Award in the category of Female Trailblazer of the Year by Canadian Lawyer Magazine’s Canadian Law Awards. Ms. D’Sa has been an elected bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia since May 2020. She is currently a member of the Credentials Committee, Mental Health Task Force and is the Chair of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. She is also one of the Bencher Representatives on the Board of CLEBC.

Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Vancouver, BC
Brook is a leading British Columbia litigator with a practice focused on complex commercial litigation. He has significant experience both regionally and nationally, and has appeared before all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada. Brook has been an elected Bencher of the Law Society of British Columbia since 2016 and will serve as First Vice President in 2024. He is currently Chair of the Law Society Mental Health Task Force, Chair of the Discipline Committee, Vice Chair of the Lawyer Development Task Force and a member of the Complainants' Review Committee. He is also currently a member of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada National Well-Being Study Steering Committee. Brook has previously served as Chair of the Law Society Discipline Committee, Vice Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee as well as a member of the Ethics Committee, the Access to Legal Services Advisory Committee, and the Unauthorized Practice Committee.

Executive Director, Lawyers Assistance Program, Vancouver, BC
Derek joined LAP as Executive Director in 1996. Derek practised law for 18 years and went on to expand his skills in business and counseling. This diverse range of interests has helped Derek become a respected leader in the legal, health care and recovery communities. He has served on committees with the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a Commissioner of the Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) and the Chair of the annual CoLAP conference for several years. He is also on several non-profit boards of societies dealing with addictions, education and spirituality. He is often called upon to present seminars and workshops throughout the province, and is tireless in his efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of legal professionals and those who care about them. He received the designation of Queen’s Counsel in 2004.

LCSW, JD, Assistant Director & Lawyer Counsellor, Lawyers Assistance Program, Vancouver, BC
Shari is a graduate of Wurzweiler School of Social Work, NY, NY (MSW) and Rutgers School of Law, Camden, NJ (JD). She received her Certificate of Business Management from Portland State University, Portland, Oregon and her license in clinical social work (LCSW). She began her work at LAPBC on December 1, 2020. Since 1999, Shari has provided confidential assistance to lawyers, judges, and law students. She was Assistant Director of the Oregon Attorney Assistance Program prior to joining LAPBC. She is experienced in counselling people on such topics as career and life transition, mental health and trauma challenges, crisis intervention, stress management, organizational and time management challenges, alcohol and substance use and compulsive behaviours.
